Waves fascinate me in part because of time I spent
lifeguarding and body surfing and in part because of
their dynamic rhythms and patterns. I chose this
image to paint from 100 or so photographs that I took on
a big surf day at Newport. The “defining moment” refers
to a captured split second of beauty, and to that instant
when a lifeguard commits to a rescue in a treacherous
environment.
